Construction of a 3 story home that allows waters to pass through the ground level carport in the event of periodic flooding.

ROSS RESIDENCE
The Tim Ross residence is the first new structure built in many years in the tiny seaside community of Tyee City, outside of Arcata. The presence of Mad River directly adjacent to the existing houses had precluded any new construction due to the periodic flooding the community is subjected to.
FEATURES
The design solution for the Ross residence was to sink steel “H” beam pilings to a depth of over 30 feet, then construct a masonry carport above that is open on all four sides to allow flood waters to pass through.
The living portion of the house is located on the two floors above the carport, with sweeping views of the Mad River, the farmlands of the Arcata Bottoms and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The house exterior is made of durable materials that are resistant to the harsh seaside climate, including metal roofing, masonry and fiber cement siding. The house is accented by the stainless steel cable deck railings, which provide for the most unobstructed views possible.
